That would mean they were aware of the child’s actual age and used that to their advantage. But one of the chief complaints against YouTube is that they’ve specifically targeted kids under the age of 13 with data collection and advertising. If a kid that’s eleven tells YouTube they’re 33 and YouTube collects their data, that’s one thing. As such, companies need to bear more responsibility for who they’re collecting data on and who they’re targeting their ads at. The root problem is that age gates, like YouTube’s requirement that people must be over the age of 13 to use their service, are about as effective as actual lines in the sand. Even after the creation of the ( supposedly ) child friendly YouTube Kids, children unsurprisingly have continued to watch videos on the original YouTube. Over the past decade, the site has changed for better and for worse, but kids watching inappropriate videos is as old as the internet itself. YouTube may or may not currently be in decline, but it’s still one of the most popular video sharing sites on the internet.
